Poornalu (poornaalu or poornam boorelu)

(Traditional andhra easy and tasty sweet recipe)

Poornalu ingredients:

Poornam or stuffing ingredients:

  • 2 cups chana dal
  • 2 cups jaggery
  • 1/4 cup cocomut pieces
  • a pinch of cardamom powder

Batter ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup urad dhal
  • Oil for deep fry

Batter preparation:

  • Wash and soak the rice and dal for 4-6 hrs and grind this into a smooth and thick batter.
  • Add required quantity of salt and mix well and keep aside.

Poornam or sweet stuffing balls preparation:

  • Clean and wash the dal.
  • Pressure cook the dal with double the amount of water for 2 whistles.
  • Allow it to cool for some time and drain the excess of water and keep aside.
  • Then mash the cooked chana dal and keep aside.
  • Now heat a pan and add grated jaggery, cooked and mashed chana dal and little amount of water.
  • Cook on low flame till you can make balls out of them.
  • In-between stir well. So that they don't burn.
  • Finally add cardamom powder and coconut pieces and stir well.
  • Remove from flame and allow it to cool for some time.
  • Then make a small lemon size balls and keep aside.

Poornalu or poornam boorelu preparation:

  • Heat a deep pan (kadai) with oil.
  • Dip the above poornam balls into the batter and fry them in oil till they into golden brown colour.
  • Remove from flame and drain the excess of oil.
  • Finally your poornaalu is ready to serve.
