Pongal Recipe

(South Indian Breakfast Recipe)

Pongal Ingredients:
  • 1 cup rice 
  • ¼ cup moong dal   
  • 6 cups water 
  • Salt to taste 
Seasoning Ingredients:
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds 
  • 1 tsp cumun seeds 
  • 1" ginger piece (minced) 
  • 1 tsp peppercorns 
  • 10 cashewnuts 
  • a pinch of asafoetida 
  • Few curry leaves 
  • ½ tbsp ghee or oil

Pongal preparation:
  • Wash the rice and dal together.
  • Add water, salt and pressure cook for 10 mins.
  • Allow it to cool for sometime.
  • Heat ghee in a pan.
  • Add mustard seeds.
  • When they start to crackle add the remaining seasoning ingredients.
  • Saut'e for few mins and pour this over the rice and dal mixture.
  • Combine well .
  • Serve hot your pongal with coconut chutney or sambar.

Prep&cooking time: 30-45 mins

Serves: 2-3
