Pepper rasam

(Milagu rasam or miriyala rasam)

Pepper rasam ingredients:

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds (seeragam)
  • 1 tasp peppercorns (milagu)
  • small lemon size tamarind
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp of oil
  • few coriander leaves for garnishing

Seasoning ingredients:

  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • few curry leaves
  • 1 small ripe tomato, chopped
  • 2 garlic flakes, roughly crushed

Milagu rasam or miriyala charu preparation:

  • Soak the tamarind in warm water for 15 mins and extract the juice and keep aside.
  • Make a corase paste with cumin and peppercorns and keep aside.
  • Now mix the corase paste, required quantity of salt, turmeric powder and asafoetida with tamarind juice.
  • Heat a pan with oil and add mustard seeds.
  • When they start to pop add curry leaves, chopped tomatoes and crushed garlic.
  • Saute for 3 mins or till the tomatoes become mushy.
  • Then pour the tamarind peppercorn mixture and mix well.
  • Now bring it to boil and turn off the heat.
  • Finally garnish with coriander and serve youreasy, tasty and healthy pepper rasam with plain white rice.

prep & cooking time: 15-20 mins

Serves: 2-4
