Kovakkai varuval or
Dondakaya vepudu
ingredients:
- 1/2 kg kovakkai or dondakayalu
- 1/2 tsp red chilli powder or to taste
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tsp chana dhal powder
- salt to taste
Seasoning
Ingredients:
- 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
- 2 garlic flakes (crushed)
- 1/4 tsp urad dhal
- few curry leaves
- 2 tbsp oil

Kovakkai varuval or
dondakaya vepudu
preparation:
- Wash and remove the edges of the kovakkai.
- Vertically cut the dondakaya into four pieces.
- Heat a pan with oil and add mustard seeds.
- When they start to pop add urad dhal, crushed
garlic and curry leaves.
- Add sliced tindora(kovakkai), turmeric powder and
salt.
- Mix well and close with a lid and cook on low flame
till the vegetable become tender (In-between stir well. so
that they don't burn).
- Add chilli powder and adjust salt and saute for few
more mins.
- Finally add channa dhal powder, combine weel and cook
for few more mins.
- Koavkkai varuval is ready to serve.
- Serve with sambar rice, rasam rice, etc...
Chana dhal powder
preparation:
- Dry roast the dhal till they turn into golden brown
colour.
- Allow it to cool for sometime then powder it.
- Store this powder in an air tight container and use
this as required.
