Drumstick Curry

(Murungaikai Kuxhambu or Munakkaya pulusu)

Drumstick Curry ingredients:

  • 2 drumsticks
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • tamarind, medium lemon size,
  • 1 tsp chilli powder or to taste
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 10 fenugreek seeds
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • few curry leaves
  • 1/2 tbsp of oil
  • salt to taste

Munakkaya pulusu or murungaikai kulambu preparation:

  • Cut the drumsticks into 2" pieces and cook till half done and keep aside.
  • Soak the tamarind in warm water for 10 mins and extract the juice.
  • Take a deep pan and heat with oil and add mustard seeds.
  • When they start to pop add cumin seeds, methi seeds and curry leaves.
  • Saute for few seconds and add chopped onions.
  • Saute till the onions become transparent.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and salt. Saute till the tomatoes become juicy.
  • Add chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and asafoetida.
  • Mix well and add cooked drumstick pieces.
  • Add tamarind juice and check the taste.
  • Cover with a lid and cook on low flame fro 15 mins or your desired consistancy.
  • Remove from flame and your easy and tasty drumstick curry is ready to serve.
  • Serve with plain white rice and papad.
