Bottle Gourd Dal

(Sorakaya Pappu or Suraikai Kootu)

Bottle Gourd Dal Ingredients:
  • 1 cup toor dal (clean and washed)
  • 1 medium size bottle gourd ( peeled and cut into 1" cubes)
  • 1 small tomato (chopped)
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 7 green chillies or to taste (slit into half)
  • 2 tbsp tamarind paste
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
Popu or Seasoning Ingredients:
  • ¼ tsp mustard seeds
  • ¼ tsp cumin seeds
  • few fenugreek seeds
  • a pinch asafoetida
  • few curry leaves
  • 3 tsp oil

Sorakaya pappu Preparation:
  • Add all the ingrediants (except seasoning ingredients) in a cooking vessel or a pressure cooker.
  • Cook on medium flame till the dal and other items become tender(If you cook in pressure cooker 3 whistles are enough).
  • Remove from flame mash it roughly and keep aside.
  • Do the seasoning in a pan and pour on top the of the mashed dal and finally adjust salt.
  • Bottle gourd dal or sorakaya pappu is ready to serve.
  • Serve with rice or roti.
