Bisibelabath recipe

(South indian rice recipe)

Bisibelabath ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice
  • 3/4 cup toor dhal
  • 2 cups vegetables (carrot, peas, beans, potato) or as you wish
  • lemon size tamarind
  • 1 onion (finely sliced)
  • 1 tbsp grated coconut
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • few coriander leaves
  • 2 bay leaf
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp ghee

Bisibela bath powder ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tbsp raw rice
  • 10 red chillies
  • 2 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp peppercorns
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dhal
  • 1 tsp chana dhal
  • 1" cinnamon stick
  • 3 cardamoms
  • 5 cloves
  • 5 badi lauvang
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • few curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp fresh coconut grating
  • big pinch of asafoetida


Bisi bela bath powder preparation:

  • Heat a pan with ghee. Add all the powder ingredients except asafoetida.
  • Roast on low flame till they turn into light golden yellow colour.
  • Remove from flame and add asafoetida.
  • Allow it to cool for sometime then grind it to a coarse powder.
  • Allow to cool, and then store it in an air tight container.
  • Use as required.  This will keep fresh for months in an air tight container.

Bisibelabath preparation:

  • Separately cook rice and dhal till soft.
  • Soak the tamarind in 1 cup of water for 20 mins and squzee and extract the juice and keep aside.
  • Heat a pressure cooker with oil and ghee.
  • Add onions and sauté till they become transparent.
  • Then add chopped vegetables and little amount of salt.
  • Close with a lid and cook on low flame till they almost cooked.
  • Add cooked rice and cooked dhal.
  • Combine well and add tamarind extract, 3 tbsp os bisibelabath powder, grated fresh coconut and salt.
  • Mix well and adjust salt.
  • Again close with a lid and cook on very low flame for 30 mins.
  • Now add 21/2 cups of water and combine well.
  • Close the pressure cooker and pressure cook for 1 whistle.
  • Remove from flame and transfer into serving bowl and bisibelabath is ready to serve.
  • Serve hot with melted ghee, papad, spicy potato roast or any other side dish of your choice.
