Aval upma (rice flakes upma / poha upma)

Aval upma ingredients:

  • 1 cup aval (rice flakes/poha)
  • 1 onion finely sliced
  • 2 green chillies or to taste
  • a pinch os turmeric powder
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut
  • few coriander leaves
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 tbsp of oil

Seasoning ingredients:

  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dhal
  • 1/2 tsp channa dhal
  • 5 cashewnuts (optional)
  • few curry leaves

Rice flakes upma/poha upma preparation:

  • Clean, wash and the rice flakes and drain all the water completely.
  • Heat a pan with oil and add the mustard seeds.
  • When they start to pop add the remaining seasoning ingredients.
  • Saute till they turn into golden brown colour.
  • Then add sliced onions and sliced green chillies.
  • Saute till the onions become transparent.
  • Now add rice flakes, turmeric powder, grated coconut and required quantity of salt.
  • Combine well and sprinkle with little amount of water and cover with a lid.
  • Cook on low flame for 2 mins and garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Remove from heat and serve hot with coconut chutney or mango pickle.
