Tomato pappu or tomato dhal

(South Indian Dhal Recipe)

Tomato pappu ingredients:

  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 2 tomato (finely chopped)
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 6 green chillies or to taste
  • 2 tbsp tamarind pulp
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste

Seasoning ingredients:

  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 10 fenugreek seeds
  • few curry leaves
  • a pinch of asafoetida

Tomato pappu or tomato dhal preparation:

  • Clean and wash the dal.
  • Add toor dal, onions, tomatoes, green chillies, tamarind pulp and turmeric powder in a cooking vessel.
  • Cook till the dal becomes tender. (If you want you can do this in a pressure cooker also. Cook upto 2 to 3)
  • Switch off the stove and allow it to cool for 10 mins.
  • Mash the cooked items with a wooden masher and keep aside.
  • Heat a pan with oil and add mustard seeds.
  • When they start to pop add cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds,curry leaves and asafoetida.
  • Saute for few mins and add the cooked and mashed dhal mixture.
  • Mix well and adjust salt.
  • Remove from heat tomato pappu is ready to serve.

prep & cooking time: 20-30 mins

serves: 4-5
