Rasam Recipe

(Tomato rasam or Garlic rasam)

Rasam Recipe Ingredients:

  • small lemon size tamarind
  • 2 tsp rasam powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • salt to taste
  • few coriander leaves for garnishing

Seasoning Ingredients:

  • ½ tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 ripe tomato (finely chopped)
  • 2 garlic flakes (roughly crushed)
  • few curry leaves
  • 2 tsp oil

Rasam Preparation:

  • Clean, wash and soak the tamarind in water for 15 mins.
  • Squeeze the tamarind untill nothing hard left of squeeze.
  • Strain the juice and add rasam powder, turmeric powder, asafoetida and salt.
  • Mix well and keep it aside.
  • Heat a deep pan with oil.
  • Add mustard seeds.
  • When they start to pop add curry leaves, crushed garlic and chopped tomatoes.
  • Saute till the tomatoes become juicy.
  • Now pour the tamarind mixture and allow to boil(don't over boil the rasam).
  • When it comes to a boil garnish with chopped coriander leaves and remove from heat.
  • Rasam is ready to serve.
