Cabbage dal

(south Indian Dhal Recipe)

Cabbage dal ingredients:

  • 1/2 kg cabbage
  • 1 cup channa dal
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 tomato (finely chopped)
  • 1 tsp chilli powder or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • few coriander leaves for garnishing  

Paste ingredients:

  • 2 green chillies
  • 1 inch ginger piece
  • 4 garlic flakes

Seasoning ingredients:

  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • few curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil

Cabbage dal preparation:

  • Chop the cabbage into medium size thin strips.
  • Clean and wash the dhal.
  • Pressure cook cabbage and dhal with 1 cup of water for 1 or 2 whistles.
  • Remove from heat and keep aside.
  • Make a paste with paste ingredients and keep aside.
  • Heat a deep pan with oil and add mustard seeds.
  • When they start to pop add curry leaves, chopped onions and saute for few mins.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and saute till the tomatoes become juicy.
  • Add ground paste and saute till the raw smell disappears.
  • Add chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt.
  • Saute for few seconds.
  • Add pressure cooked cabbage and dal.
  • Combine well and cover with a lid and cook on low flame for 5 mins.
  • Finally adjust salt and garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Remove from heat and cabbade dal is ready to serve.
  • Serve with white rice, rasam rice, roti, chappathi, etc...
